It may feel like a tricky question.
We’ve all had a bad at-home waxing experience, and it may be the idea of this pain that is putting you off waxing.
While waxing isn’t entirely painless, it’s not as bad as you might think. The best way to ensure a pain-free waxing experience is to go to a professional. Just like colouring your hair, you’ll always get the best results when you go to someone who has the right tools and experience.
Not everyone experiences the same level of pain – whether it’s at home or professional treatment. Not everyone describes the feeling as being ‘pain’ and more like a sting or pinch that you’ll feel while having your brows or lashes done.
I’ve been waxing since the early 2000s and specialise in intimate waxing. For me, waxing stings for a few seconds when the wax is removed, but it’s not pain.
Even if you have sensitive skin, you can still do waxing treatments. Any pain or stinging you feel will usually only last a few seconds. Blink, and it’s over. As you start to incorporate waxing into your routine, this feeling will become even more manageable as your skin adapts to the sensation.
What do you think waxing feels like?
I reached out to our community on Instagram to ask them about their experience with waxing. What do you feel after removing a wax strip? Is it painful or manageable? Does it sting or feel like a pinch?

Making waxing pain-free
Although everyone’s skin reacts differently to wax, there are steps we can take to make waxing as painless as possible. Every treatment is going to give you a pinching or stinging sensation, which can’t be avoided. Pain is subjective, but my goal is to always make your waxing experience as comfortable as possible.
You’re more likely to experience sensitivity in intimate areas, such as your bikini area and underarms. My go-to waxing treatment uses hot wax to make the treatment relatively pain-free. Using hot wax helps to open up your pores while hydrating your skin. Hot Wax works with everything from sensitive skin to thicker hair, giving you an effective and less painful treatment.
The beauty of hot wax is that it gives you better results, it shrink wraps around the hairs without sticking to the skin (unlike strip waxing) working to lift more of the hair, meaning you don’t need to re-wax the same area repeatedly and greatly minimises the chance of bruising. You’ll get smooth skin and reduce your likelihood of experiencing pinching or stinging on your skin.
Tips for making waxing more painless
There are a few steps that you can take to improve your waxing experiencing. If you’re looking to start waxing, these are the tips that I recommend to every client.
1. Always exfoliate
Whether you’re shaving or waxing, the golden rule is always to exfoliate. These two things go hand-in-hand and are key to getting the best results. Exfoliating will remove dead skin cells, unclog your pores, and remove dry skin. When your skin is freshly cleansed, there isn’t anything coming between the wax and your skin.
2. Pain relief
If you have sensitive skin or are going for your first intimate wax, you can take a pain reliever. I recommend an ibuprofen 30-60 minutes before your treatment to help minimise any pain.
3. Know when not to have a wax
After waxing, your skin needs time to recover. It’s best to do your waxing a few days before a big event to give your skin time to heal and recover. You’ll want to avoid waxing before and during your period as your skin is more sensitive. Wait a few days, and your skin will thank you!
